SEO In Depth: Your Missing Links Part 2

Without a doubt the most viable source of currency on the web today are links. For example, when you link to another website, what you’re essentially doing is sending a signal to the search engines (Google, Yahoo, Bing) that whatever site you’re linking to is a significant source of information on that particular topic. So it makes sense that the more links you’ve got driving people to your website, the more likely you are to prosper, i.e. gain exposure, build a following, and hopefully earn tons of money in the process. Despite Google’s continuous attempts at downplaying the importance of links, they are absolutely essential for improving your search rank for the keywords you are targeting. No question about it.

In the last post titled ‘SEO In Depth: Your Missing Links Part 1,’ I spoke briefly about Internal, External/Outbound, and Backlinks. In layman’s terms, there are really only two types of links: inbound and outbound. Outbound links start from your site and lead to an external site, while inbound links (backlinks), come from an external site to yours. Despite the surface-simplicity of it all, there are some other link-related terms floating around out there that could do with a little explanation. Read on.

Organic Link – Organic Link Building means that while involved in the process of link building, you’re not paying any money for it. Paying money for link building is known as Paid link building. Organic Links are typically done in the form of guest posts on other people’s blogs. You submit a quality post to another webmaster in exchange for them linking back to you. It’s a win on both ends because you get a link to your website and a wider range of exposure, and they get solid content for their website, which in turn helps them become more useful to their readers.

Anchor Link – Anchor links, also known as ‘jump links’ or ‘in-page links,’ are links that lead a reader to another part of your page. If someone clicks on an anchor link, he/she doesn’t get thrown to a new page, but simply to another part of the same page. They’re a bit like sub-headings. Visitors to website’s generally like anchor links because they give them a solid overview of the content on a page and help them to quickly go to the part of the page that interests them most without having to hack their way through material that may actually hinder their search. The last thing you want is for someone to get frustrated with your site and then click off out of frustration.

One-Way Link – These are very powerful links. They’re pretty self-explanatory too. One-way links are links to your site from other sites which do not receive a link back from you. Essentially what makes them so impressive according to the Search engine’s is that your website is so valuable, interesting, or useful that other sites can’t wait to tell other people about it. There’s a whole slew of ways to generate these: give away free e-books, get listed in business directories, or do something so entertaining or outrageous that people will be compelled to share it.

You can have the greatest product in the world or be the most gifted painter on the planet, but if nobody can find what you’ve been laboring so diligently at, or even knows anything about it, then you aren’t going to make any money with it. Now that doesn’t mean that you have to want to sell everything you create, but you wouldn’t be reading this post if you weren’t at least a tad interested in making some money right? Well, it all starts with links . . . understating them, earning them, sharing them. Welcome to the global community . . .
